April 6th, 2017 meeting

Our speaker for this evening was the very interesting Andrea Manias. She shared with us her quilting journey,  for which she puts the blame squarely on our member Micki A., who introduced her to the art/addiction of quilting. She said she was always a sewer, starting off with making doll clothes and then moving on to making her own clothes. She shared with us some of her quilts, from when she first started until the present.  Her grandmother was a quilter and an embroiderer. This gorgeous quilt, which is 100 years old, was passed on to Andrea from her grandmother. Andrea’s first quilt was from an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day book, a log cabin. She moved on from there to do another log cabin, and then into some samplers.

She does her own machine quilting on her domestic sewing machine. This Double Wedding Ring was done in sections on her domestic machine.
In addition to quilting, Andrea also has a love for embroidery and embellishments. She took part in one of our workshops a few years ago doing “Manipulated Landscapes”. This was her result.
She takes part in all kinds of workshops and learning experiences and has branched out from doing traditional quilts into much more art and expressive quilts, although she believes all quilts are art and all quilters are artists. She is using some very innovative techniques, including using photographs, shrunk down very small, to make the bricks in this building. It was a fascinating trunk show. She says she is developing some teaching workshops of her own and they would be wonderful to take.
After Andrea’s presentation, we had member show and tell. Micki A. showed a wonderful scrap quilt, made in her attempt to use up her 2 1/2 inch scraps.
Maureen H. showed her project that she made last year. There was a block pattern released every single day of the year. Some of them are 3 inch blocks with the teeny tiniest of pieces.

Linda W. showed us a bag she made using what sounded like a very interesting process. Might be a good idea for a workshop......
Tiny C. showed us some quilts she made from a book called “Quilted Symphony”.
Toni showed a quilt made from the Legend of Zelda. To see more photos of Andrea’s trunk show and also from the show and tell, go here

April Meeting Information

Please remember that the meeting date for this month is one week early. We’ll be meeting April 6th.
This month’s speaker is Andrea Manias, talking about “Stupendous Stitches”. She will be holding a workshop on the same subject Saturday, April 8th.
For this month’s meeting, please bring in any finished slab blocks you may have. This is the last date for handing them in at a meeting. Any further blocks you make will need to be given to Rose B. By April 30th, at the latest.
The comfort quilt committee has enough blocks and quilts to be going on with, so we will be taking a break from making Friendship Star blocks.
As usual, please bring your name tag, chatelaine and the notion of the month.
This month’s “notion” is to wear a flower or flowers.
See you Thursday.
