September 2015 Meeting

Our first meeting of the 2014-15 guild year was busy and filled with information, inspiration and wonderful quilts.  It was very nice to see all of the returning members as well as some new members.  President Micki welcomed everyone to the meeting and explained to new members how the guild is organized.  She introduced the guild executive.  Lorna (Program Chairperson) and Edith (Community Outreach Chairperson) talked about their areas of responsibility and what they had planned for the upcoming year.  Charlene (Quilt Show Chairperson) gave us an update on our upcoming Quilt Show.

An important part of the meeting was the Presentation of a Lifetime Membership to June K.  Barb A. introduced June to the guild members.  June joined the LFQG in1982.  She served as President of the Guild for 3 consecutive years.  June shared her love of quilting by teaching many workshops at the guild including Celtic Interlace and 3D Flowers.  She also helped novice quilters learn new skills.  June is the winner of many quilting awards including awards at the Western Fair and the International Plowing Match.  The award that June is most proud of is the "Best Use of Fabric" in the Trend Tex Challenge at the 1994 CQA show in Halifax.  Her quilt is hanging in the Corporate Offices of Trend Tex in Coquitlam, BC.
Thank you June, for your years of service to the guild and your generosity in sharing your knowledge and skills with other quilters.

During break time the sign-up tables for Workshops, the Row of the Month Mystery Quilt and Volunteers were very busy.  Also on display were the quilts turned in by members for Community Outreach, the projects made by members who went on the CQA Bus Trip and the donations of small projects for the Sale Table at the Quilt show.  We also enjoyed snacks and juice or tea, provided by the Program Committee.

After break, we were introduced to Susan Clark, who is a member of the Oxford Quilters Guild.  Her topic was "What Kind of Creative are You?".  Her talk was informative, funny and filled with wonderful quilts.  I'm sure that her Workshop in November is going to be great!

The following is a message from Lorna (Program Chairperson):

There are still openings in Susan Bowslaugh's "Crosses Quilt" workshop on Friday, October 10. This would be a perfect scrappy project and can be done in any size you wish. It provides a great opportunity to learn the technique of improv piecing using fabric you already have in your stash. If interested please contact Charlene at by September 24.

First meeting of the 2014-2015 LFQG Year

Welcome back  to the beginning of our 2014-15 LFQG season.  The executive has had their first meeting and it sounds like there are many exciting and interesting things planned for the upcoming year.  Our first meeting is
Thursday, September 11, 2014
@ 7.00PM

St. George's Presbyterian Church,
1475 Dundas St., London, ON
(just east of Hale St on the south side of Dundas)
The following is from our Program Coordinator, Lorna:

The program committee has chosen to focus on Canada as a theme for the 2014-2015 year. Our visit to Fanshawe Pioneer Village in June reminded us of our rich quilting heritage, and Quilt Canada in St Catharines gave us a glimpse into how talented Canadian quilters today continue to expand and broaden the boundaries of this traditional art form.
We will use this year as an opportunity to introduce some of the very accomplished quilters in our area and to proudly show case the vast and varied aspects of our country. To this end, all our speakers and workshop instructors this year are Canadian. As well, the program committee has designed a Canadiana Mystery Row Quilt which we will make available to you as a block of the month. This quilt is made up of various blocks each of which represents a different facet of our country. We are very excited about this undertaking and hope you will consider participating. Details will be presented at our first meeting.

Our year will wrap up at the June banquet where we hope to introduce a speaker who has played a significant role in promoting both quilting and Canadian culture and heritage.
In September we look forward to seeing the array of quilted creations made from the swatches of Canadian themed fabric distributed to bus trip participants and to welcome our first guest speaker, Susan Clark of the Oxford Quilters’ Guild. Hope to see you there proudly displaying the notion of the month, a maple leaf.
Lorna M.-Program Coordinator

"What Kind of Creative Are You?" is the topic of the talk that Susan Clark (our speaker for the evening) will be presenting to us.  It should be a very interesting talk!
It was decided, because of how busy this meeting will be, there will not be a vendor this month.

Quilt Show Information

Here is some information from Charlene, our Quilt Show Chairperson.

Quilt Show Update

It is my hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer; however with our September meeting coming up quickly I would like to remind everyone of the following:

  • Quilt show registration forms are due on Sept 11th.   The blank forms can be found on our blog but we will have some hard copies at the meeting.  Please note every member of the guild is eligible to show a quilt in the quilt show and we encourage everyone no matter your experience to show your projects.
  • We are also collecting small projects to be donated to the members boutique for sale during the quilt show.  These can include things such as bags, pin cushions, hot mats, pillows, pillowcases, placemats whatever you wish.  After the quilt show any unsold items will be donated to the hospital gift shops.
  • There will be raffle tickets available for those who wish to pick them up to sell and we will be collecting the funds from those who have sold them over the summer.
  • We are also looking for baked goods for our tea room.  These can be brought to our Sept and Oct meetings and will be kept frozen until the quilt show dates.
  • Edith will be at the meeting with volunteer sign up sheets -- remember to check with her  we will need people not only during the quilt show but for set up and take down as well.

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding the quilt show please contact Charlene at or my home number 519-686-8892.

The Registration Form for the Quilt Show is on the right sidebar towards the bottom under Miscellaneous Links.

President Micki has found a document from one of our newsletters on "How to Make a Hanging Sleeve for your Quilt".  You can find the link for this document on the right sidebar towards the bottom under Miscellaneous Links.
