Road to Friendships Quilt Show 2014

What a great show!  That was one of many compliments heard from people who attended our LFQG Quilt Show on October 17th & 18th.  Congratulations and thank you to Quilt Show Chairperson Charlene and her committee for all of their hard work.  It made this event a huge success.  Thank you also to all of the guild members who volunteered their time and talents working in the different areas of the quilt show.

The following is a quilt show report form Charlene.

"A Road to Friendships" was the theme of our bi-annual quilt show held on October 17th and 18th at Oakridge Presbyterian Church.  Judging from  comments received  during the 2 days of the show and the days following I think saying our show was a success is an understatement.  Over 530 guests attended the quilt show which featured 11 vendors, an antique sewing machine display,  demonstrations and a display of over 140 quilts of all sizes.
One of the main focuses of the quilt show committee was to illustrate to our guests who we are as a community.  This was the theme behind the main hall displays which featured an information table as well as Community Outreach and Program Committee displays.
Another focus of the show was a Raffle Quilt featured beside the Welcome desk.  This quilt was made of red and white London Road blocks donated by members.  The quilt was won by Kaitlyn Robinson of London.

For members of the quilt show committee there were many moments over the two days where compliments from our guests were touching and almost overwhelming.  One of the best moments for me came when I was showing a non-quilter around the quilts on display -- she was in awe and stated that she had no idea of what quilting really was until then.  That to me illustrated our success and showed one more person what a beautiful quilt can be."

Of course, the main focus of the show was the Quilts!  It was a wonderful display of  talent and diversity.

I attempted to take a picture of every quilt or quilted item on display.  If I missed your quilt, I apologize.  Please let me know and I will take a picture of it at the next guild meeting and include it in the album.

October 9th, 2014 Meeting

President Micki A. opened last Thursday's meeting of the LFQG with information about happenings in the local quilt scene.  She also told us about the change in our insurance provider and the large savings that we will have because of this change.  Program coordinator Lorna explained the upcoming events in the guild and Community Outreach coordinator Edith gave us the numbers of donated quilts and pillowcases. Quilt Show Chair Charlene told us how the final arrangements for the quilt show were coming together and asked for members to see Edith at break and sign up for empty spots on the volunteer schedule.

Break time was busy with members signing up for workshops and for volunteering.

The Guest Speaker for the meeting was Susan BowslaughHer lecture was titled "From Traditional to Modern". She talked about her transition from a traditional quilter to a modern quilter.  She explained what members of the quilting world were most likely to be "Modern Quilters" and the characteristics of a "Modern Quilt". It was an interesting and informative talk.

Crosses Quilt Workshop

On Friday, Oct 10th a small but enthusiastic group of members met with Susan Bowslaugh for her workshop-"Crosses Quilt"-which included improv piecing, wonkiness and the use of alternate grid. The workshop challenged the participants to get outside their own particular style and give the Modern Quilt Style a try.

Pumpkin Wall hanging

The very talented artist and quilter, Jill Buckley, has posted a free pattern and tutorial on her blog (The Quilt Rat).
Jill is a former LFQG member and has taught several workshops for the guild.  She was the "Artist in Residence" for the CQA for several years.
Because the "Notion" of the month is a pumpkin, I thought that this was a great project.  The pattern was previously published in the CQA Newsletter. The pattern includes fusible applique and thread painting. Jill has given me permission to include a link to her blog posting.

Quilt Show Update

Charlene, Quilt Show Chairperson has written the following update:

We are in our final countdown before quilt show and wish to remind everyone of the following:

1)  Our tea room committee is looking for donations of baked goods to be served to our guests
during the quilt show.
They have specifically asked for finger type foods (that kind that require no forks  to eat). Anything brought to the meeting on Thursday will be kept frozen until the quilt show.  Donations can also be brought directly to Oakridge Presbyterian Church on Thursday Oct 16th during set up.

2)  We will accept last minute entries to the quilt show on Thursday. Please bring completed quilt show registration forms to the meeting.

3)  We ask that members bring all sold and unsold raffle tickets to the guild meeting.  Tiny Campbell will be collecting these. We are required to account for all tickets and appreciate everyone's help with this.

 4)  The volunteer list will be at the meeting  --- if you haven't signed up yet please do so.  There are several spots where assistance is still needed.  We are still looking for  volunteers to help setup at the Church on Thursday  --- we would especially appreciate if anyone has a husband, boyfriend, son or brother who can help with some of the heavier aspects of setup.

 5) We are also in need of a few Step ladders (the taller ones) to be used during setup.  If you have one we can borrow please contact Charlene at

6)  Quilt drop off will be Wednesday Oct 15th at Oakridge Presbyterian Church from
1 pm to 7 pm.  Please bring all quilts for the show on that day.

 7) Quilts can be picked up after the show on Sunday October 18th from 1:30 to 4:30 at the home of Amalia Samakis, 1026 Blackmaple Court, London Ontario.
