Wool Applique Workshop with Jill Buckley

On Jan 18th, 2014, 23 LFQG members got together to learn wool applique and embellishments on cotton.  The very talented Jill Buckley was our teacher and the designer of the project that we worked on.

Jill's Samples

Jill told us about different ways of marking the applique design onto the cotton. One of her preferred methods is using the "Pounce" chalk method.  With Jill's help, the design was quickly "pounced" onto all of our cotton background fabric.

The  applique pieces were then cut from the wool and whip stitched onto the cotton using a fine and matching thread.  Jill taught us 6 embroidery stitches (running stitch, seed stitch, blanket stitch, fly stitch, French knot and bullion stitch).  After a discussion about different threads and the best way to use them, we were turned loose to use our own creativity and imagination to embellish our wall hanging.

At the end of the day, Jill gave a short talk about dying your own threads to allow you to get more variations then are available commercially.
It was a fun and inspiring day.  It was great to learn (or attempt to learn) some new skills and to slow things down a bit and do some handwork.

Thanks Jill, for a great day-I will master that French Knot one of these days!!!

January 2014 Meeting

The January meeting of the London Friendship Quilters' Guild was held January 9th.  Our guest speaker was Jill Buckley.  Jill shared her evolution as a quilter with us.  Jill had worked in sewing factories and then started her own business sewing wedding dresses, costumes and other garments.  Jill made her first quilt after she retired from her sewing business.  She then joined the LFQG and has been making innovative and artistic quilts ever since.  Jill loves to be challenged and has participated in and won many prizes competing in "Quilt Challenges".  She is now "Artist in  Residence" for CQA and provides a new quilt pattern in every issue of the CQA newsletter.

Jill has generously made a free give away PDF pattern for "In Stitches". Find it here.
(I found that the PDF was very slow to download, but if I clicked on the "print" icon (upper left), the pattern opened and I could then print it.-Maureen)

Our Vendor for the evening was Joyce from Joyce's Sewing Shop.

Joyce donated a lovely quilter's tote as a raffle prize at the guild meeting.
Krysten McCoy from Melon Patch Quilts donated a voucher for machine quilting as a raffle prize at the guild meeting.

Jacqui VMS from the Program Committee told us about a new upcoming Guild Challenge.  It is called "A Road Runs Through It".  Stay tuned for further details from Jacqui.

See you in February!

Library Links

Patricia B. (our Guild Librarian) and her helpers have gone through the library and organized all the books.  Pat has made lists of the books and with Maria D's computer help, we now have an online catalogue.
There are 3 sections to the catalogue and each has it's own link.  The links are:
1)- Instructional quilting books, 2)-Non-fiction, Fiction and History books and 3)-CDs, DVDs, and Videos.
These lists will be kept updated as books are added or removed.
You can find the links to the book lists on the right sidebar of the Blog under a new category-"Library Links"
This has been a huge and time consuming job.  Thanks Pat and helpers for all your work!
