Sew-in Day, Nov 23, 2013

On Saturday, Nov 23rd,  21 members of the LFQG met together at St. George's Church for a day of sewing and friendship.  The "weather outside was frightful" but inside the sewing machines were humming and the room was filled laughter and creativity.
A very big "Thank You" to Lorna M for organizing the day and baking great muffins for snack time and wonderful apple crisp for dessert.

Lorna-making sure we were all well hydrated !!

Many of the ladies were working on Christmas gifts and also on Placemats to be donated to "Meals on Wheels"

Applique Buffet Workshop with Anita Zobens

On Saturday Nov 9th twenty quilters (guild members and friends) enjoyed a wonderful workshop taught by Anita Zobens.   The class was called "Applique Buffet".
In the morning we learned techniques for Invisible Machine Applique and Fusible Applique.  We learned about using wash-away templates, glue sticks and invisible thread.
In the afternoon we experimented with threads of different weights and fibers while sewing decorative stitches.  It was very interesting to see how a decorative stitch could look completely different depending upon the thread that was used.  It was also a great way to become more familiar with your own machine and the decorative stitches that you hardly ever use.

November meeting

Our November meeting was held last Thursday at Oakridge Presbyterian Church.  The room we were in was nice and bright and many members made positive comments about the location.
President Micki spoke to us about using this church for a
Quilt Show in October 2014.  This also met with approval from the members.  Charlene O. has volunteered to be the Chairperson for the quilt show as long as she gets lots of help!  Thanks, Charlene!!!
Lorna told us about the results of last months questionnaire.   The results indicate that the bus trip to the CQA show in June, "Sew in Days" at the church and a June Banquet are events that the membership would like to participate in.  Tickets for the bus trip will go on sale in January.

Anita Zobens from Cotton Mill Threadworks in Dundas, ON was our speaker for the evening.  Her talk "Choosing Threads Fearlessly" was very informative and should open up many of us to using different threads in our quilts.
Anita was also our vendor for the meeting and her beautiful display of threads made it easy to pick the perfect thread for the next project on everyone's "to do" list.
Anita has shared a document with us that includes a lot of the information that she told us during her talk.  It is named "Thread Education by Dr Bob 2012".  It is  "Posted with permission from Bob Purcell,".  It is a large document, so it might take some time to open.  To view the document go to the
"Miscellaneous Links" section on the right sidebar.

Placemats for Meals on Wheels
For the last several years we have been making placemats for Meals on Wheels to give to their clients with their Christmas meals.  We are hoping that all members will contribute at least one placemat.  Some members are participating in the "Placemat Colour Challenge" and while we encourage members to do this, it is not necessary.  You can make a placemat with any fabric and in any style that you wish.  For inspiration here are some photos of placemats that were donated in previous years.
