November meeting with Martha Schellingerhoud...

The November meeting of the LFQG featured the usual socializing with our quilt friends, shopping at our guest vendor, Quilt Junction's,  lovely selections, our business meeting and enjoying a wonderful presentation by Martha Schellingerhoud.  Wow, what amazing quilts!! There was so much detail on her quilts and we were all in awe and then she would produce the miniature version of it!!  Martha brought three large quilt hangers, so we were treated to these three quilts as a backdrop for her presentation (sorry about the yellow hue over the photos due to the light in the hall):

Many of Martha's quilts are inspired by other artists' work.  Refer to her website linked above for information on the inspiration behind these quilts.  Thanks for coming Martha!

Just a reminder that this weekend is "Quilts at the Creek" at Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto with the York Heritage Quilters Guild.  It will be held on July 28 & 29, 2012.  Information and directions are on the web page.

SHOP HOP - Are you ladies (and men?) enjoying the Yours to Discover Shop Hop?  You have til next Tuesday to complete your passports.  Has anyone been to all of the shops yet?  My patient husband agreed to take the back roads on our vacation up north and we managed to visit four of the shops on that trip. (I forgot to take pictures)!  Hoping to finish the last few this week.  We have some lovely quilt shops in Ontario and the drive takes you on some very scenic roads.

Don't forget to send me pictures for the Quilters on Vacation time for the blog!  I took my little Featherweight up North on vacation and set up a nice little sewing station in the add a room of the trailer that we rented.  I spent a few happy hours sewing blocks for a new quilt.  Ah, that's MY idea of a vacation :-).

The Program Committee met last night and the Executive meets next week.  Plans are being made for another fantastic year for the London Friendship Guild!  Stay tuned for information.

Great advice for visiting a Quilt Show

Kathy Wagner visited our guild in March and shared her little quilts with us.  She has a blog which has some great reading and inspiration.  She posted one with advice on enjoying a quilt show.  Well worth reading!

Machine Quilting workshop by Elaine Quehl

Elaine Quehl taught a workshop on free motion quilting today and 18 ladies took advantage of the class to practise our skills.  We learned that we must doodle, doodle, doodle and practise, practise, practice.  We were able to try a lot of different threads and picked up tips and helpful advice from Elaine.  She was very encouraging and kept us going with a new sheet of motifs to practise regularly throughout the day.

Doodle your designs Ladies!

Practise, practise, practise!!
Look at the concentration as these ladies practise their next motifs!

Lynda W

Chris B

Rose B
Elaine demonstrated the various techniques on different machines during the day.  Rose got to take the sandwich sample home because it was her birthday.

Some of us needed a little help reaching the pedals of our machines :-)

A lovely motif!  If we keep practicing, we will be able to quilt like this as well.

More photos of the day can be viewed here

Elaine also blogged on her own site which can be read here.

May Guild Meeting

On Thursday, May 10, 2012, the London Friendship Quilt Guild held their annual general meeting chaired by our very capable co co President, Lynda.

Our vendor for the month was Sew Creative from Mount Brydges and members were kept busy shopping for goodies that just had to come home with us.

We were very excited that we had a full slate of nominees for all the positions which were open.  Welcome to all the new members of the executive!  We look forward to working together to provide another exciting year for our quilt guild.

We also enjoyed tea and wonderful piece of carrot cake iced especially for our guild in a quilting theme.  They were even the correct colours for our guild!!  Don't they look lovely?  They tasted very good too.

there were some lovely mugs!

Our guest speaker was Elaine Quehl of Ottawa, Ontario.  She presented a power point presentation and showed about 20 of her quilts.  The lights played a little havoc with the camera light, so some of the colours are not accurate.  They can also be viewed on her website in the gallery here.

More photos of the evening can be seen here

Our last meeting of the year will be the annual banquet.  We hope to see you all there.  It will be held in St. Thomas at the renovated train station, a beautiful venue.  A re-enactor/story teller will be our speaker for the evening.  It will be a wonderful end of the year and you won't want to miss it.  You will be able to sit back, relax with great quilting friends, enjoy a tasty dinner, be entertained and maybe even win a door prize!!  Click here to arrange for tickets.  Directions will be posted shortly, so keep an eye on the blog and there will also be information for those who wish to carpool to St. Thomas.

Guild meeting April, 2012

We had a wonderful guild meeting on Thursday, April 12, 2012 with two of our members, Maureen H. and Beth M. sharing a trunk show of their quilting journey with us. Maureen began with some of her early quilts and it was very interesting to see the progression in her quilting skills and choices of colours:

We had a special guest at the Meeting and she agreed to pose for us...

Check out her chatelaine!!  Drama Queen?  She was a very classy and gracious lady!!

Beth also showed her different styles of quilts she has made over the years:

Isn't the resemblance between this quilt and our Red Hat guest amazing??  Yes, our wonderful guest is Beth's Mom.  This quilt hung in the CQA show last year in London.

Beth's Dear Jane quilt:
